Revise Music: a checklist for IT

Revise Music is a website for music theory and ear training, used by pupils from Year 7 to GCSE. There is nothing to install. This page lists everything a school network or managed computer needs, so it works in the first lesson.

  1. Allow one address

Everything comes from www.revisemusic.com over HTTPS (port 443): the page, the sounds, sign-in and saved work. revisemusic.com only redirects to it.

The site loads nothing from anywhere else: no fonts, scripts or images from other sites, no adverts, no trackers and no analytics. There are no pop-ups and no WebSockets, just ordinary HTTPS requests. If your filter works by category, it may list the site as education or music.

  2. Use an up-to-date browser

    • Chrome or Edge on Mac, Windows or Chromebook: everything works, including MIDI keyboards. This is what we test on first.
    • Safari and Firefox, and iPads: everything except MIDI keyboards. The on-screen piano works everywhere.

JavaScript and site storage must be allowed for the site, as they are by default. No extensions, plug-ins or apps are needed.

  3. MIDI keyboards optional

Any USB MIDI keyboard that works without a driver (class compliant) is fine. Plug it in before opening the page.

The first time, Chrome asks whether www.revisemusic.com may use MIDI devices. Press Allow once on each computer. Chrome has no admin policy just for MIDI, so if your management tools block the prompt, allow the site in Chrome's site settings for MIDI devices.

  4. Sound and the microphone

The listening exercises play sound, so pupils need speakers or, better in a shared room, headphones. The audio comes from the page itself, so nothing else needs allowing.

The microphone is only used by the tuner, and only when a pupil turns it on. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. If you manage this with Chrome policy, it is AudioCaptureAllowedUrls with https://www.revisemusic.com. Without it, the tuner is the only thing that stops working.

  5. Saved work, and computers that wipe at log-out

A pupil who is not signed in keeps their progress in the browser's storage on that computer. If your computers clear browser data when a user logs out, or pupils move between computers, they should join their class and sign in. Signed-in work is saved on our server and follows them to any device.

    The site sets no cookies.

  6. Emails to staff

Passcode resets, licence messages and invoices come from an @revisemusic.com address. If staff mail is filtered strictly, allow that domain so they do not land in junk.

  7. A whole class at once

Thirty or more pupils on the same network at the same time is normal: during a live quiz or a duel each computer checks in every few seconds with a small request. The site runs on Cloudflare, so the school's connection is the only limit.

  8. Data protection

The site keeps as little as it can. A pupil's account holds their name, email address and their work. There is no tracking and nothing is sold or shared for advertising. The privacy notice is under Privacy at the foot of the home page, and a data protection pack is available for the school's records.
